Metsä Tissue joins the research network “Modellfabrik Papier in Düren”

As of July 1, 2023, Metsä Tissue, part of the Metsä Group, will become a shareholder of “Modellfabrik Papier in Düren” in Germany. Modellfabrik was founded in 2020 and is a company focused on the research and development of sustainable paper technologies. It carries out basic research in the field of emission-free paper production.

The main goal is to achieve 80% energy savings in paper production and climate neutrality by 2045 – i.e. CO2-free paper production. In this way, we want to actively contribute to the fulfillment of the Paris Agreement on climate change and protect Germany as an industrial location. As an official shareholder, Metsä Tissue is part of an interdisciplinary research network involving industry and academia in Germany – and complements those in Finland, where Metsä Tissue is based.

“Sustainability is a fundamental strategic pillar at Metsä Tissue and the Metsä Group. Our participation in “Modellfabrik Papier in Düren” is an active contribution to a carbon-neutral society and a more sustainable future. As an international producer of tissue and grease-resistant paper products, we can contribute our expertise and collaborate with a network of highly experienced experts from research and industry to research the future of low-energy, resource-saving paper production,” said Alexander Deutschle,  Research Director and the development of Metsä Tissue.

Metsä Tissue plays an active role in the research network. Since its foundation in 2020, “Modellfabrik” has been working on four self-funded research projects.

“As a shareholder of Modellfabrik Papier in Düren, we not only have the opportunity to actively shape the challenges of climate-neutral paper production through modern research. We are also strengthening the Düren area, which is still the largest location in Germany focused on paper production. Through the research network, we are ensuring Germany’s long-term competitiveness as an industrial location as well as local jobs,” said Michael Barth , vice president of operations for Metsä Tissue’s greaseproof paper division.

“It is an important step for Metsä Tissue to become part of this research network. This indicates that as a company we take climate change very seriously and that as a paper manufacturer we are aware of our responsibility. It is important that we actively address the challenges of climate-neutral paper production,” said Pascal Stephan , Vice President for Production at Metsä Tissue’s Kreuzau plant .

By 2025, a new modern building for Modellfabrik Papier will be built in Düren, which will meet the research mission as well as the latest ecological standards. In the future, innovative solutions will be developed here not only for paper production, but also for other industries with similar challenges.
