ABB to showcase measurement technologies for more stable and efficient paper production at MIAC 2026
- ABB will exhibit at MIAC 2026 at stand C3, Lucca Exhibition Center, October 7-9
- Pressductor® web tension measurement, UviTec™ BOD/COD monitoring and electromagnetic flow measurement will demonstrate the role of reliable measurement across the paper mill
- ABB will also highlight L&W Freeness and Fiber Online, providing continuous freeness and fiber measurements to support refining optimization and machine runnability
ABB will showcase technologies designed to help paper manufacturers improve process stability, product quality and operational efficiency at MIAC 2026 in Lucca, Italy, from October 7-9. The business will exhibit at stand C3, bringing together measurement, automation and digital solutions for the paper industry.
Maintaining consistent quality, reducing web breaks, and maximizing machine efficiency all depend on accurate and reliable process measurements. At MIAC, ABB will showcase technologies that provide stable measurement across key areas of the mill, from web tension and water management to process flow.
A key focus will be ABB’s web tension measurement solutions based on proven Pressductor® technology. Engineered for demanding paper mill environments, the technology provides accurate and stable measurements while withstanding vibration, temperature variation, and mechanical overload. This helps manufacturers maintain consistent paper quality, reduce web breaks and downtime, and support long-term process stability.

ABB will also showcase UviTec™ BOD/COD monitoring for real-time measurement of biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand and organic load in wastewater treatment, helping mills optimize treatment and support environmental compliance.
ABB will also demonstrate how electromagnetic flow measurement of water and process liquids can help optimize resource consumption and improve operational efficiency in papermaking.
Alongside its measurement and analytics portfolio, ABB will highlight L&W Freeness and Fiber Online, which combines online measurement of freeness and fiber properties in a single system. By providing continuously updated information on dewatering status and fiber quality, the solution helps operators identify process variation earlier and adjust refining accordingly. It is designed to support closed-loop control, optimize refining and energy consumption, improve machine runnability, and reduce wet-end sheet breaks.
“Reliable measurement is fundamental to maintaining quality and machine efficiency in paper production,” said Nicola Mazzoleni, Regional Center Manager – Force Measurement, from ABB’s Measurement & Analytics division. “At MIAC, we will show how continuous, accurate data across web tension, fiber refining, water and flow can help mills identify variation earlier and make better process decisions.”
Visitors can meet ABB at stand C3 at the Lucca Exhibition Center during MIAC 2026, October 7-9, 2026.
Stora Enso is piloting MV Titanium™ in Varkaus Mill
Stora Enso, the renewable materials company, is piloting ABB’s MV Titanium™ technology – the world’s first medium voltage motor with built-in speed control – to operate a primary air blower at its Varkaus Mill in Finland. The new unit has been installed as an upgrade of an existing direct-on-line (DOL) motor and is already delivering energy savings.
Stora Enso, as part of the global bio-economy, is a leading provider of renewable products in packaging, biomaterials, and wooden construction. Varkaus Mill produces around 420000 tonnes of containerboard a year for the manufacture of corrugated boxes, which provide durability and strength in shipping and packaging applications. Stora Enso aims to continuously improve energy efficiency, strives towards energy self-sufficiency, and low carbon solutions at its operations.
In Stora Enso’s quest to improve energy efficiency at Varkaus Mill, one focus area was the primary air blower for the fluidized bed boiler that produces steam and energy for the factory. With the old DOL motor, the output was throttled by a damper. This method of control was inefficient.
“It was clear that installing a speed-controlled motor for the primary air blower was vital to cut our energy consumption. And we already had experience with using ABB variable speed drives (VSDs). The challenge was that we had no space in our electrical room to install another drive, so after we saw the MV Titanium™ concept on the factory floor, we recognized it as the ideal solution. This installation is in its early days of operation. However, it is already providing valuable data, that will help us to further optimize the motor’s setup to deliver additional benefits,” said Tarmo Saukkonen, Production Superintendent, Varkaus Mill, Stora Enso
The power of innovation
MV Titanium™ revolutionizes how electricity is converted into motion. ABB is the first to offer a medium voltage motor where speed control is brought right next to the process. The simplicity of the installation is groundbreaking: a compact motor and speed control solution that doesn’t require an electrical room, separate HVAC systems or an additional transformer. This eliminates the need for long cabling runs, enabling significant installation savings. It is an ideal solution for pumps, fans and compressors.

ABB is a global technology leader in electrification and automation, enabling a more sustainable and resource-efficient future. By connecting its engineering and digitalization expertise, ABB helps industries run at high performance, while becoming more efficient, productive and sustainable, so they outperform. At ABB, we call this ‘Engineered to Outrun’. The company has over 140 years of history and around 110,000 employees worldwide.
