Knowledge transfer and networking at the PTS Conference: Paper & Board Recycling

Knowledge transfer and networking at the PTS Conference: Paper & Board Recycling – Focus on Digitalisation and Sustainability. After an online edition and a break due to corona, the established PTS Re-covered Paper Conference will now take place under a new name – Paper & Board Recycling – as a hybrid event on 23 and 24 May 2023 in Dresden.

This year, the international conference will be held under the theme “Paper Recycling: Smart & Circular” and an expert audience from paper industry, circular economy, politics and science is invited to a lively scientific exchange.

International speakers will present their perspectives on current developments and trends within the recovered paper value chain in seven thematic sections. The presentations will focus on digital and sustainable topics under the theme “Smart & Circular” and emphasize their potential to transform paper recycling. Panel discussions at the end of each section aim to encourage the audience to ask questions and exchange views and networking opportunities will be pro-vided by the supporting programme of the conference.

Looking to the future: Legal framework and packaging trends
Reflecting the European Green Deal, the conference will open with an overview of new and future regulations at EU level. The focus will be on the revision of the European Packaging Regulation, presented by Cepi (Confederation of European Paper Industries). The Environmental Footprint method to measure life cycle environmental performances will be also discussed. Circular Analytics complements the thematic section with a holistic view of the sustainability assessment of packaging. In the subsequent session “Packaging trends – impact on recyclability”, the presentations will illustrate how this is taken into account in the design of new fibre-based packaging. One of the speakers will be the start-up wir.kiste.kreis that will present innovative solutions for reusable shipping packaging.

New possibilities: Digitalisation and the development of further fibre sources
Digital business models and technologies open up new action fields for paper mills, recyclers and waste sorters and collectors. The session “Digital Solutions as Enabler for a Circular Economy” highlights the use of digital technologies for the implementation of the circular economy. The presentations range from the online platform developed by Cyrkl for managing material flows up to the blockchain technology for recording transactions. The development of previously unused fibre sources also plays an important role in this regard. In the section “Lost fibres – 100 % recycling?”, the complexity of this topic will be examined from a scientific and a technical point of view.

Innovations: recycling technologies, process digitalisation, measurement techniques
The second conference day is dedicated to trendsetting and technological aspects of recycling. During the morning session, innovative recycling technologies such as dry defibration or laser de-inking will be presented and an overview of the experience gathered will be given. In the subsequent section on process digitalisation, experts from practice and science, including from Kemira and RWTH Aachen University, will talk about the intelligent dosing of additives, self-learning assistance systems and current research projects of the Modellfabrik Papier. The conference ends in the afternoon with the topic of “Innovative Measurement Techniques”. Different partners from the field, for example Pixact and BTG Instruments, will present how these techniques positively influence the effectiveness of waste paper sorting and stock preparation, and how optical measuring methods offer new possibilities for paper recycling.
