The technical program of the pulp and paper sector’s main annual event focuses on new market opportunities based on already-consolidated manufacturing processes and the potential of biomaterials
The 55th Pulp and Paper International Congress — ABTCP 2023 will address innovation as a pillar of circularity in the forest base industry. To be held in-person, October 17-19, at the Novotel Center Norte, in São Paulo (SP), the event promoted annually by the Brazilian Pulp and Paper Technical Association (ABTCP) proposes as main theme a subject that impacts current competitiveness and promising developments for the sector’s activities in the coming years. “During the three-day event, we will show how we are permeating new markets and applications, given that waste from the pulp and paper industry and biomaterials from wood can effectively be transformed into new products,” says Silvana Meister Sommer, Klabin’s Industrial Research & Development Manager and ABTCP 2023 Chairwoman.
Executives and professionals from the pulp and paper industry, as well as students and professionals in other fields, will have the opportunity to update their knowledge and check out the latest trends on a wide variety of topics. Based on the event’s main agenda, the program will include technical sessions on Pulp, Paper, Environment, Sustainability, Forestry, Industry 4.0, Engineering and Digital Transformation, Recovery and Energy, and Biorefinery.
Pedro Fardim from KU Leuven; Niklas Berglin from NiNa Innovation; Roberto Andres Villarroel Guerrero from Eldorado Brasil; Luana Dessbesell from Aalto University, Teruyuki Mori and Manabu Yamamoto from Group Oji, and Graziela Baptista Vidaurre, from the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES), are some of the renowned researchers who have confirmed their participation.
Viviane Nunes, head of Training and People at Universidade Setorial ABTCP, informs that the entity has a qualified evaluation committee, which always gathers the most relevant contributions from academia members and professionals from domestic and foreign technology companies so that the attending public is aware of the main developments in the sector.
“In this year’s edition, we brought experts from Brazil, Canada, United States, Finland and other countries to form the committee. These professionals with vast technical knowledge and experience in the sector see to that the latest and most relevant topics in each area are selected and included in our programming.”
Silvana recalls that the best about ABTCP goes beyond the technical exchange: it resides in sharing experiences and networking, as well as, connecting with purpose.
“We are at a very advanced stage of technology, but people and, especially, the human view of each job are fundamental,” says Klabin’s Industrial Research and Development manager and ABTCP 2023 Chairwoman.
As the sector’s main technical link, ABTCP eyes future practices
As the main link for disseminating technological innovations related to the pulp and paper production chain for more than five decades, ABTCP closely follows the latest trends to always stay up-to-date and satisfy technical demands of the sector.
“ABTCP understands not only the relevance of the topic, but also the importance of promoting discussions about it, in order to disseminate the results of current research and even train professionals who are part of the sector to further boost this industry and expand the scope of circularity,” says Rodrigo Vizotto, Chairman of ABTCP’s Executive Board and CEO of Kadant.
According to Vizotto, one of the advantages of this expanded dissemination, which involves other stakeholders and thus promotes an exchange of expertise and provides opportunities for sharing work developed, is the power of approximating different players participating in the transformation process coveted by society. “I am fully convinced that ABTCP is an increasingly stronger link that unites all these stakeholders and that this is very beneficial at strengthening the bioeconomy, when looking at things more broadly. A clear demonstration of the positive results coming from the work carried out is that we have observed continuous increases of audience in events promoted by ABTCP, in addition to the effective participation of technical committee members, as well as other indicators that evaluate the entity’s initiatives. These numbers reinforce the purpose of its strategic plan of making the association’s leading role even stronger when it comes to technical themes pertaining to the sector.
