In the process industries, there are always many pumps that are lubricated with sealing water. Enormous amounts of water are used – which then often simply runs down the drain, requiring wastewater treatment. A New solution from Flow Control can now radically reduce water consumption in the process industry.
The Finnish company Flow Control Oy has developed an innovative solution based on a closed system, SealCooler, which only requires 8-9 litres of sealing water, this continuously circulates in the SealCooler and guarantees that the seal works as it should.
Now water consumption can be massively reduced! “It is good for the environment and offers huge savings in energy consumption”, explains Timo Huhtala, Technical Director at Flow Control.
A typical paper mill can have hundreds of pumps in operation – and these require enormous amounts of water.
Example – a paper machine can have 100 pumps. A pump typically uses four litres of sealing water per minute. If the pumps run 24 hours a day for 30 days, there will be over 17 million litres of water usage in a month. All this sealing water is released as wastewater, a huge waste of resources, or it can be completely or partially purified in a separate facility and brought back into the system as new sealing water, at huge costs and high energy consumption.
SealCooler offers a radical improvement:
The new SealCooler Thermosiphon SP8 solution from Flow Control is designed to be used with dual mechanical seals, together these form a closed circulation loop. This system keeps the seal pressurized, lubricated and cooled at all times, while also preventing the danger of dry running. This improves seal life, with fewer downtimes for maintenance as a result.
“Our solution saves both water and energy. It provides significant savings in the consumption of sealing water compared to an external flow-through. In addition, the sustainability of the entire business increases enormously”, says Huhtala, adding: “All paper mills that today use millions of litres of water and large amounts of energy to clean dirty water, that is simply pumped back again, should switch to our “closed loop system” solution”.
Another advantage of a closed system is that the risk of dirt getting in becomes negligible; dirt and particles can otherwise break down the mechanical shaft seal and cause malfunctions.
Development work on the new technology began after studying the challenges in already existing units, where water consumption was measured with traditional flow meters.
More and more companies are sensibly switching to SealCooler and since it came on the market, it has spread rapidly!
Nipman Paper Technology
“This technology is hugely exciting, it is superior, ultra-reliable and requires minimal maintenance, it also supports companies’ efforts towards sustainable development”, says Robert Clayhills, CEO at Nipman Paper Technology, Flow Control’s Exclusive Representative of the product on the Scandinavian and European market, including the exciting markets of Turkey and the Middle East.
- Furthermore, the technology will make it possible to handle less wastewater at the wastewater plant, leading to energy usage reduction and less voluminous processes, again resulting in further environmental savings.
- Also, this is not only a new product but a new innovation and process solution to help companies in their pursuit of increased sustainability, improved water savings and overall process efficiency quickly, by changing from old technology to new in a very easy way.
SealCooler is delivered directly from the factory in Muurame, Finland, where many manufacturers of flow technology are located.
